Bryant graduated from The University of Kansas, and took courses in history and literature at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He then obtained an MA and became a Ph.D. candidate at The University of Wisconsin. For four years at Wisconsin, he was a professional clarinet player; playing classical, jazz and dance-band music. Bryant coached with major clarinetists of his time. As a clarinetist, he played solo recitals and chamber music in New York City at Merkin Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop, and more. He was also a National Public Radio broadcaster at WHA in Madison, Wisconsin, occasionally doing voiceover work for TV. He moved to New York City in 1969. He was part of the English faculty at Baruch College from 1970 to 2012. He became involved with foreign students and was asked in the 1990's to be the American Director of a language school in Nanjing, China. For five years, he interviewed and hired teachers for that Nanjing program, which taught adults, and augmented their curriculum. His wife, Jennifer, is a Yorkshire native. She is a playwright and drama teacher, and a graduate of the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
